GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

£ AMATEURS v. PROFESSIONALS. SHAW BREAKS COURSE RECORD, j (By Telegraph—Press Association.) | PALMERSTON N., Oct. 23. | An cquinoxial wind made matters very trying for the golfers who com-1 peted in to-day’s Dominion amateurs I v. professionals match at Palmerston j I North, but it- also served to show the! capabilities of the competitors under adverse weather conditions, and while it was only to be expected that good scores would be the exception rather than the rule, there were, nevertheless. many good figures. A. Shaw, the present open and professional champion, was off colour in the four-hall in the morning, but in the afternoon he played splendid golf, defeating T. H. Horton, the 192 S amateur champion, S and 7, and completing the full round in 70, one stroke j less than the course record and two j strokes under 4’s. and this despite four wasted putts and a hunkered ball. The professionals won the match with one game in hand in the fourhall. the singles being evenly distributed. The first amateur pair. T. H. Hor-- 1 ton and Dr. lv. Ross, did well to win out against A. Shaw and E. J. Moss. With the exception of Shaw, who was not up to form, the golfers played exceptionally well and for the first- nine holes the -score was one’ under 4’s and equalling par. In this half Horton , played particularly line golf. At the seventh (484 yard's) he ran down a 60 foot putt for an eagle 3—2- under par for the hole. The amateuig were two up at the turn, but the professionals won hack this deficit by taking the , 10th and 11th. The next three holes were halved, following which the professionals’ -short game left much to ho desired and the amateurs drew ahead again and eventually won out two and | one. A. D. S. Douglas and J. L. Black, the second amateur pair, were .also successful against their opponents, E. S. Douglas and C. C. Clements. Both Black and Duncan went out in 36, their best ball for this distance being 33. A. Murray and N. H. Fuller won out two UP from the amateurs A. J. Quin and B. Smith, the best ball irrespective of sides over the whole distance being 68. Murray is a stylist who gets good distance with his drives and there are some who favour his chances in the open championship. N. Bell and T. S. Galloway were dormy three against B. V. Wright and 1 A. E- Conway, but the amateurs stuck to their guns and won back two of the last- three holes, ending up one down j after a good exhibition of golf. J. R. Galloway and G. W. Ritchie ; finished up all square against B. M. Silk and J. P. Hornabrook, representatives of the younger golfers. Silk , played very good golf over the first j half, Hornabrook being unsteady and striking trouble in the bunkers. Gal- ( loway carded some excellent holes, but bis intimate knowledge of the course . did not assist him materially. He drove out of bounds at the 13tli, hut nevertheless succeeded in taking the hole in par figures. Ritchie’s long game was up to championship class, but his short game was indifferent. Leo. Quin again found conditions very trying in the afternoon, when he was defeated by J. D. Mdtosli, 5 and 4. Mclntosh played par golf oil the outward journey and carded four 3’s. Quin settled down more after the homeward turn and missed fewer putts at the short holes. He saw Ins ball blown out of bounds at the lltli and lost the hole. Quin, however, had the measure of the revenge at the 12th, where he sank a 20 foot putt for a birdie 2. Quin also took the 13th in par figures, but Mclntosh took the 14th and the match 5 and 4. Quin carded one over 4’,s for the last 11 holes, while. Mclntosh, who was 4 up on Quin, ended up with a card of one under fours.
