STANDARDISATION OF CHEESE

EFFECT ON QUALITY. DAIRY BOARD' DECISION AWAITED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 22. In reply to Mr C. A. Wilkinson in the Hbus’e of Representatives to-day, Hon. E. A. Ransom, on behalf of Hon. A. J. Murdoch, stated that the remarks relative to' the quality of cheese attributed to' Mr W A. lorns in the press reports of a meeting of dairymen at Hawera appealed! to be a reiteration of what he had previously stated on several occasions since his return to’ New Zealand, together with some comment on the criticism his statements had provoked. It was recognised, continued the Minister, that there had been a falling off in the quality of New Zealand cheese during recent years, the vast majority of which was full cream cheese. It was also recognised that the average quality of standardised cheese hack not been of as high a quality as was expected. Although it was* evident some traders had a, prejudice against standardised cheese there was evidence that some standardised cheese had proved of a quality acceptable to the trade. Furthermore, there was at present a di-, versity of opinion in New Zealand) amongst cheese producers regarding! the manufacture and marketing of standardised cheese.

Resolutions demanding the abolition of standardised cheese had been received from several meetings of dairymen in the South Island, including the South Island Dairy Association. On the other hand, a resolution protesting against any proposal to abolish the present. regulation had) been passed ah a representative meeting of cheese factory companies at Hamilton, would therefore, appear that until the results of the deliberations of the forthcoming meeting of the Dairy Board were known it was inadvisable to proceed further with the matter.
