GOLF IN AUSTRALIA

MORPETH DEFEATED,

(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph

Copyright). Received 12.30 p.m., to-day. MELBOURNE, Sept. 18.

Main interest at the golf championships centred in the amateur match between Sloan Morpeth and Hattersley, the 22-year-clid Sydney player. The latter trailed the ex-New Zealander all day and the first time he got in front was when he ran down a. 23-foot putt for a “birdie” two at the final hole to win the. match. In the morning Morpeth putted brilliantly and mainly owing to that be had great figures, going out in 34. and was three up at the end of the round. Hattersley got even at the 27th when he holed a long putt. At the 32nd a sensational smite by Hattersley sent the ball 300 yards from the tee and it landed on the edge of a bunker. He eh ip’ped out beautifiilily and holed a. 23-footer. The following four holes were desperately fought for and halved. In the two extra, holes Morpeth recovered brilliantly, but Hatterslew's long putt decided the match. Hatterslev is the biggest hitter in the game in Australia- to-day.
