HERBALIST ARRESTED.

MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE. i

(Special to “The Star.’’} NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 12. The police raided the premises of au Indian herbalist in Gill Street, New Plymouth, searched the rooms, and have arrested the occupier, Abraham Wally Mahomed Salaman, on the charge of manslaughter of a boy aged 61 years.

Two lorry loads of paraphernalia, chemicals, and other matter were conveyed from the herbalist’s house to the police station. It is alleged by the police that this property was used by Salaman in the course of his business. Salaman, who formerly carried on business as an herbalist in Auckland, was formally charged before a Justice of the Peace this morning and bail was granted at £SOO in accusedls recognisance and two sureties of £250 each.

The charge made reads: “That between July 30 and August 2, 1930, at New Plymouth, being an unlicensed medical practitioner, he did, in attending to and prescribing tor one Lyall Gordon Christie, fail to use competent skill, and by improper medical treatment he did unlawfully accelerate the death of the said Lyall Gordon Christie, thereby committing the crime of manslaughter.” It is understood there are several other charges of a different character pending against accused, but these were not proceeded with this morning. The child’s parents reside at Fordell, Wanganui, and the death occurred in " New Plymouth. The raid was made by two detectives and two police officers iu the morning, but accused was not arrested until late in the afternoon.

Over ten persons were waiting for the herbalist’s services when the police arrived.
