Nearly 400 new cars awaiting shipment at Toledo (U.S.A.) were destroyed bv fire. The damage was estimated at £IOO,OOO.

4 Riley Nine Brooklands model recently completed the journey.from New York to Los Angeles, a distance of over 4200 miles, in five days, 20 hours 13 minutes. The average speed was 41 miles an hour.

A “Noise Committee ’’ in Paris proposes that motor-car hooters should be prohibited and considers • that gramophones, loud-speakers and merry-go-rounds make noises which cannot be abolished, but should be attenuated.

J)r F. J. Waldo, the senior London coroner, stated recently that the average speed of vehicles involved in accidents in the city of London last year was nine miles an hour, and that there was only one which occurred through a vehicle travelling at over 20 miles an hour.

A British motorist was summoned on the ground that his ear had no means of audible warning and that it created an excessive noise. The magistrate hold that such a noisy vehicle did not need a hooter.

In Great Britain the breakdown of a vehicle due to overloading or to neglect now become an offence under a new Ministry of Transport Order, which also requires the owner to remove the broken down vehicle without delay; otherwise the police will remove it, and the cost will be charged up to the owner.

When ordinary strap leather in used for .fan-belt drivers a very satisfactory joint can be made by chamfering the ends and overlapping them, then tackling them together with six or eight tacks on each side, the length of the tacks being such that the points can be just turned over. Many joints have been made in this way, and it has been found that the belt does not click at the joint and will stand up to a terrific amount of hard work.
