SCHOOL COMMITTEE

A meeting of the school committee was held in the school on Y\ ednesday evening, those present, being: Messrs A. J. Prestidge (chairman), A. Hobertson, A. Riddick, L. Preece, \\ . E. Carter, Grainger and W. T. Seed (Secretary). A fair amount of correspondence was dealt with.

A request from the South Taranaki School Committees Association, asking for a statement of capitation received and the cost of fuel,- lighting- and cleaning was read,- the secretary being instructed to give the necessary information.

The committee strongly protested against the action of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education in its recommendation to the House to divert the revenue from the Opaku Reserve Endowment to any institution outside Taranaki.

Reference was made to the early departure of Mrs. Russell (headmistress) and to her good results in the school work. The .secretary was instructed to forward to Mrs. Russell a letter ol appreciation of her keen interest in the work of the school.

Correspondence from the postmaster at Xew Plymouth relative to the earlier delivery of mail at the Matapu post office was read, in which he stated that, the contract had been let until the end of the year, after which the matter would be reconsidered.

PERSONAL

Mrs. Russell, who has been headmistress at the Matapu. school for the past three years, sails from Wellington for China on the 12th inst. with her daughter. Mr. W. H. Stevenson has been appointed headmaster of the school. Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Gould, ol Palmerston North, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Seed, left bn Monday on a motor trip to Auckland.

BALL

Thp ball committee held a very successful ball on Friday evening. Tlie floor, which was in good order, was comfortably filled with dancers, visitors being present from Opunake, Hawera, Eltham and surrounding districts. Excellent music was supplied by Henderson’s Star Orchestra. Messrs T. Huckstep and T. Guy carried out tlie duties of masters of ceremonies.
