INCOME TAX EXEMPTION
LOWERING OF AMOUNT.
SUGGESTION NOT FAVOURED,

AUCKLAND', Sept-. 11. A suggestion of a member of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce that the Government should reduce the amount exempted l from the income tax from £3OO to £2OO is not favoured by the acting-Rrime Minister (Hon. B. A. Ransom). The Minister’s reply, which was received by the council of the cykamber today. stated that the gain in revenue would not compensate for the increased expenditure and difficulties of collection. An alteration in the law would create a class of taxpayer not easy to handle and to some extent resentful of the imposition. “I think this reply is nothing more than a confession of weakness,’-’- said Mr. A. G. LUnn, who moved that the matter should be referred back to the committee for further consideration. This course was adopted.
