(By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., .Sept, 11.

An accident resulting in tlie death of a. well-known Palmerston North undertaker, Henry Herbert Griggs, and his 12-month-ohi grandson, Peter Brace, occurred this afternoon _on the main Palmer ston-Wanganui highway, half-a-mile oil the Bulls side of Awahuri.

Griggs was accompanied in the car by his daughter, Mrs R. Brace, her infant son and Mrs Latty and Mr Williams.

The driver apparently went off the road when going down a small hill to pass two oncoming ears, one of which was endeavouring to get ahead. Both vehicles passed Griggs, who then turned to the centre of the road, lost control and applied all the brakes. The car capsized. The driver was killed outright, the baby dying in a private hospital at Palmerston North an hour after admission. The others escaped unhurt, although the top portion of the car was reduced to matchwood.
