Copyright.) Received 10 a.m. to-day. LONDON, Sept. 10. The Australians’ festival match against Taunton’s Eleven was commenced at Scarborough this morning. The weather was fine but dull. The wicket was urotected, but the outfield was wet and the start was delayed. Australia won the toss and is fielding. The teams are:
Taunton’s Eleven.—Wyatt, Duleepisinhji, Hobbs, Tate, Leyland, Rhodes, Sutcliffe, Duckworth, Larwood, Sandham, Parker. Au stral iaR icliardson, Bradman, Kippax, Jackson, Fairfax, Grimmett, McCabe, Hornibrook, Oldfield, Wall, Ilurwood.
All the English eleven had previously played in Tests. Runs came freely until, at 39, Oldfield brilliantly caught Hobbs; Hornibroook was not called on until the match had been in progress for an hour and he got the Indian’s wicket for the seventh time in the tour, Oldfield again distinguishing himself. Hornibrook had another success in the next over, having Sutcliffe caught in the slips. The retiring batsman had batted for 100 minutes and had hit six fours.
The Queenslander continued to trouble the batsmen. Leyland was never impressive, while Wyatt was slow. Hornibrook secured his lOOtli wicket of the tour when he had Larwood caught in the covers. Sandham and Rhodes raised the score to 200 in 210 minutes, retrieving the situation. The former’s stubborn 50 took 130 minutes. Hornibrook bowled continuously for 210 minutes and was accurate throughout. The fielding was of a high standard, Oldfield and Richardson being superb. Scores: TAUNTON’S ELEVEN. First Innings.
