OLD BOYS’ CRICKET CLUB

ANNUAL BALL. A BRILLIANT SUCCESS. Rarely has the Winter Show hall and its approaches looked prettier or more artistic than was the case last night on the occasion of the annual ball of the Hawera Old Boys’ Cricket Club, with whom were associated the committee and members of the High School Old Girls’ Association. They -are to be heartily congratulated on the _ success attending their efforts for their third annual fixture, which well maintained the standard set in the past two years and which will help materially to popularise these two school institutions.

The two committees responsible for the general organisation were Misses Campbell, Evans, Brown, Stevens and Petersen, and Messrs .T. Matheson, .7. Ch covers, P. Hayes, C. Dowdle, A. Walker, with Air L. Walker as hon. secretary. They were assisted by Mesdames T. Hobbs, .T. W. Harding, Matheson, and Ashton, who very efficiently supervised the supper arrangements, no light task when it is realised that the company present quite taxed the accommodation of that spacious hall and that three sittings were necessary in the large supper room.

The decorations were a marked feature of the evening’s function and were strikingly well arranged. At the main entrance was an archway and then one went up a pathway bordered on both sides by grass lawns, over which were suspended cabbage palms, pot plants and other hangings all gaily illuminated, while at intervals there were willows and other trees, all lending a touch typical of the great game. In the hall, approached by decorated stairways, there was a forest of streamers, neatly scolloped, m orange and blue with pretty greenery and floral effects all round, while in the centre of the left-hand wall was a stage, enclosed by greenery, for the musicians. Nothing prettier than the combined general effect could have been devised, and the members of the committees are to be highly commended on the taste and individuality shown in their work. The men’s committee acted as M. ’sC. and left nothing undone that would contribute to the pleasure of thenguests, while McNeill’s orchestra provided excellent music, which was much appreciated by the gay throng of dancers, on a floor that was in perfect condition, the result of much good work by a special committee.

Visitors came from -Marlon, Wanganui, New Plymouth, Manaia, and many parts of Taranaki to be present, and all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It was in every way one of the best held in the Winter Show hall.
