WORK OF THE MONTH.

There weire. present at the ordinary meeting of the Waimate West County Council to-day Crs. E. Long, (chair), F. Mourie. J. S. McKay, H. H. Buxton, F. T. MjoPhillips, J. Leslie and T. A. Bridge, ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The engineer reported as follows : The whole of the Normanby Road, contract, except 20 chains, has been resurfaced; with bitumen. Fifty chains on the Lower Normanby Road l have been treated l similarly, while the filling over the Waiokura River on the Normanby Road has been scarified, levelled and re-grouted with bitumen. The side tracks on this road had been graded! in several places. Fifteen chains on the Upper Winks Road had! been re-surfaced with river shingle and 25 chains' of the old metal road had been scarified and rolled. The road to Round Bush had received attention and 40 yards of stone were crushed on behalf of the Kaupokonui Dairy Factory.

CANCER RESEARCH

An appeal was received ironi the Canes r Research Committee (Wellington) towards funds for addition to the medical seliooi m l>unedm. —It was resolved' to donate the sum of £lO 10s. The chairman, said that no appeal was so' well justified and, if an amount were given by local bodies, everyone gave a share through thei rates. He considered- it the most important in the world at the present time and that no ratepayer could object to giving to such a fund. The decision to donate £lO 10s was supported by all present, the opinion beng expressed that people could not give for a better purpose. The chairman added that the man with the greater area of land would pay more than the man with a small farm, and all, therefore, paid pro rata

GENERAL..

The Wainrate Plains Public. Library applied for andl was granted the usual sunsidy of £5. The chairman remarked that actually the .library was used as much by, country as by townspeople. A letter was received from Dr. MeCred.y., health, officer at New Plymouth, asking the council to re-consider its decision to give, no increase; in salary to the district health officer, and urging that the duties had much increased. —lt was agreed to reply that the council could not see its way to alter its previous decision. In reply to the appeal made by the Mayor of Stratford for funds to lielp the family of the late Mr. Lance Gibson, who lost his life on the. mountain, it was resolved to post subscription lists at the county office, at the banks, and at the. stores in Otakeho, Aurqa, Kapuni, and; Kaupokonui. The chairman said that any such donations would be, given for a good purpose, and even small sums would be welcomed. . A slaughter house licence was received from the Live Stock Division for Mr. L. C. Harrison. In regard to the, road subdividing Mr. Mug.geridge’s property it was agreed that, as the engineer had reported the work had been done to his satisfaction, the dedication of the road would be completed. Reference was mad© to the gorse on the Roundbush Road and it was stated that little attempt was being- made to check its growth. In places it was nine feet high. It was not right, it was stated, that this should continue. ,lt was agreed that instructions should be given to have the work done. The -chairman said that the engineer had done well in securing a portion of the bitumen supply before the main order arrived and would be able to complete work around Manaia before going to the rest of the county. It was left to the engineer to do some repair work at the Sheet, Road near the factory, where horse traffic had had trouble because the horses slipped on the asphalt. The engmeei said it was the camber on the road that -caused the trouble. Permission was given to the Manaia School Committee to erect a shelter shed for school children on the side of the road at the Lower Normanby Road corner, near the South Road. Accounts 'were passed for paA mont and the council adjourned.
