MANAWATU SPRING SHOW

Important dates in the stock world this year are November f>, 6, and 7 next, the dates set down for the 4.5 th annual Metropolitan Spring Show of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association at Palmerston North. This show has always attracted a great deal of attention in the farming world of New Zealand, as well as in other parts of the Empire. The fat lambs from this event, which are sent to London for judging as frozen meat, always command marked attention among the Home buyers, recent retro rt-s .stating that they are second to none in the world. The schedule, which will be available shortly, has been revised from cover to cover, and contains much information which will be of use to exhibitors. Farmers and breeders will note that the clause in the stock sections, “No competition, only half prize money/’ has been deleted, and exhibitors in these<sections will receive the prize money whether there is competition or not. New classes have been instituted, such as calf-rearing competition under call clubs’ conditions, Jersey class for novices, while in the pig section a special class has been instituted for juniors rearing the best bacon pig. This latter class is on the same lines as the special bacon class which carried on to the Winter Show for completion. .A class for-fat‘lambs on the same lines as the bacon competition will be carried out-this year for the first time, the lambs being killed .and held in cold storage until the Winter Show, when they will be exhibited as frozen lamb, giving some idea of what is required by the London market. '1 he steer-riding competition which was instituted last year will be again staged on the opening day this year, and should prove as attractive an event as last year. Closing dates for entries are as follow: Schools section, October 4: home industries, needlework and Photography, October 11; ring competitions, horses, cattle, sheep, fleece wool and pigs, October 18; steer riding competition and late entries on October 25. Schedules will be available shortly and will be forwarded post free on application to the secretary, Mr. AV. T. Penny. P.O. Box 85, Palmerston North.
