Are You Bankrupting Your Soil :h Plant Food, in the form of Phosphate, Lime and Potash, is being continually taken out of dairying land, and unless steps are taken to replace this loss, the carrying capacity of the land will drop steadily until the farm will not pay its way. Mr. A-. H. Cockayne, Assistant DirectorGeneral of Agriculture, gives some interesting figures regarding the drain of phosphates caused by dairying: — “It was not sufficiently recognised that dairying was an exhausting type of land utilization. The 3001 b. cow, in its consumption of 20 tons of grass per year, took in nearly 001 b. of phosphoric acid (equal to nearly 3cwt. superphosphate), and of this amount, not far short of 20 pounds of phosphoric acid was mainly lost from the soil in the shape of milk, and nearly 40 pounds was returned to the soil in the shape of manure. These facts indicated that, apart from increasing fertility, top-dressing was essential _to repair phosphate losses, and in addition the best, use of the fertilising agent iii manure should be made by frequent spreading of the droppings by chain and tripod harrowing.” If increased production is to be maintained, or increased still further, superphosphate must be applied in increasing quantities, and most dairy farmers fully realise this fact. One farmer, at least, is using 7£cwt. per acre over the whole of his area, applying it in three dressings. His butterfat production amounts to oyer 2501 b. per acre, and the cost of his super, per lb. butterfat is only just over 1 fd.
