HAWERA ATHLETIC CLUB

ANNUAL BALL. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES

St. Joseph’s Hall, Hawera, presented a gay scene last night on the occasion of the annual ball of the Hawera Amateur Athletic. Club, for the success of which all concerned are to be congratulated. They achieved a success which should serve to foster even greatei' enthusiasm in the affairs of the club than in previous years. The hall was prettily decorated with a wealth of streamers in the club’s colours, red and black, and the effect was markedly good. This was continued in the supper room and on the stage, the whole of the work being done by the joint committees. Other effects ‘of a novel character were a. big boat in the hall, packed with balloons, which, towards the end of the evening was allowed to fly open and release the balloons, confetti and streamer dances, and the twilight effect, all Very pretty and striking. Visitors were present from Wellington, New Plymouth, Stratford, Manaia, Eltham and Patea. The committees responsible for the general arrangements were Mrs Lendriun, Mrs. Greaney, Misses Pit ter, Stevens. Pawcliffe and Thurston, Messrs L. Hunt, A. E. S'! evens, Bridge and R. Bend rum (honorary secretarv), while Mr. J. Frey no acted as M.C. . . , The music was supplied by \\ ills Melody Makers and a dainty supper was served by the ladies. There were a considerable number in fancy dress and the prizes were allotted by the judge, Mr. G. E. Laidlaw, to Miss C. Thurston (Spanish Lady) mid Mr. L. A. Newell (Cowboy). Others in fancy dress were Mrs. Greaney, Miss Zena George, Mrs. Seager, Miss K. Hickey (all Jazz ,Pierrettes), Misses Z. Thomas (Early Victorian), Q. Goldstone (Dolly Varden), V. Allen (Gipsy), D. Morrissey (Carnival Pierrette), F. Landon (Harem Lady), G. George (Dutch Girl), A. Conway (Mexican Girl), C. Rothe’ry (Harlequin). T. Riley (Persian Princess), Z. Spragg, E. Murray, M. Batchelor (Hawaiians), J. Lawn (Jockey), M. Falconer, Wellington (1930 Bathing Girl), Rustling (Hawaiian), Messrs J. Barre (Domino) ancl L. Lloyd (Old Maid).

During cue evening the iron, secretary, -Air R. Lendnnn, tlhanked all present for their support. He asked Mr L. Hunt, club captain, to present the trophies won during the past season. The list was as follows: —Athol Grant Cup: L. A. Newell. Armstrong Cup: K. Fov. F. Bone. Cup: L. Toy. Steoondary schools trophy: A. Gray. Sargent Cup : Miss EL Toy . Cann Cup:_ F. Kendall. Coleman Cup: D. Wills. Cambrian Rose Bowl: C. Griffin and R. Kelsen (equal).
