YOUNG PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY. KEENLY CONTESTED DEBATE The usual fortnightly} meeting of the St. John’s (Hawera) Young People’s Institute was held last Monday evening, but owing lo the counter attractions the attendance was greatly depleted, there being only 2'S members present. Mr Cion gave an interesting address on the history of the pipe organ, in which he outlined the evolution of the organ from the instruments first described by the’word, to those iwhich we know to-day. A) debate 'that '“Ancient Lenders weildod greater Power than Moderns’’ followed the lecture. Messrs A. Tulloclc (loader), O. Clement and Miss R. Keys took the affirmative and Messrs D. Good (lead'd'), B. Watts and Miss M. Whitelock the negative. The latter were the victors by 179 points to 164. The best speakers in order of merit iwore Mr B. Watts, Mr Good and Miss* Tt. Keys. It was decided at the meeting that the banquet bo hold on '.September S, and, that the oratorical contest as set down for that night be cancelled.
