Lord Stonehaven, Governor-General of Australia, wbose term expires shortly, is to .spend a week or two in New Zealand en route to Britain. He is to arrive in Wellington on October 5 and will be accompanied by his aide-de-camp, Lieut.-Commander Mioholl. Dr. R. C. Brewster New’ Plymouth, arrived in Wellington by the Makura' on Monday morning. He lias been spending a holiday in Papeete. Mr. Rod Syme, of Hawera, left this morning for a ten days’ trip to the Tongariro Chateau with a party of 86 from the Ruapehu Ski Club. Owing to health reasons, Sir William McPherson _ Deader of the Opposition, in the Victorian Parliament, and a former Pi;ime Minister, lias resigned from politics, states a Melbourne cable. Wing-Commander Grant-Dalton was a visitor to Hawera last evening to confer with officials of the Hawera Aero Club, leaving at 2.30 p.m. to-day for New Plymouth. Mr Jack Cummins, formerly of New Plymouth, has died at Wellington after a severe illness. He was a resident ot New Plymouth for 20 years and was bandmaster of the Citizens’ Band for six years. Previously he had been ibandmaster of the FeiMing, Dyttelton Marine and Ofpunalce bands, with all of which he had considerable success at contests. Mr Cummins was in his ■sixty-fifth year and leaves a widdnv and two sons. Messrs Joseph and! Francis, and two daughters, Mrs J. A. Barker and Mrs S. F. Langley. The Rev. Arthur Liver.sedge-, formerly of Hawera, and the. Rev. H. Parsons attended, as the New Zealand delegates, the annual conference of the United Methodist Church in Sheffield last month. They werei given a welcome on behalf of the conference by the president, the Rev. A. E. J. Cossom, who asked that they should 'bear the greetings of the United Methodist Church in England to the Church in New Zealand.
