LATE SIR MAUI POMARE

CASKET LYING; IN STATE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 25. There was a large .and representative attendance at the funeral service to Sir Maui Pomare at St. Paul’s ProCathedral. The principal mourners were Lady Pomare, her two sons and daughter, and her sister, Mrs. R. •Sbei-ratt. The Chief Justice, Cabinet Ministers and members of all branches of the Legislature and departments were present. Mr. A. C. Day represented Government House, The address was by Canon Williams. He said that Sir Maui Pomare wa-s one who always had the welfare of hi-s race at heart. Prominent positions won by members of the Maori race should be an encouraging assurance to all that the native who possessed ability and diligently cultivated it had an equal opportunity with the pakelia of rising to the highest position. The, casket now lies at Parliament House. A party of Maoris assembled on the steps and greeted if, with a wailing ceremonial and a welcome address was made to Lady Pomare by Sir Apirana. Ng at a, who afterwards led the mourning Maoris in a lament for the dead.
