LONG FLIGHT
ICELAND TO NORTH AMERICA FORCED LANDING MADE.
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright). ST. JOHN’S (Newfoundland), Aus 23. Captain Gronau, who is flying from Iceland to North America, departed from Greenland to-dav and was .sighted over Gradv, Labrador, at 1 p.m., Eastern standard time. He intends co alight at Cartwright Harbour, Labrador. NEW YORK, Aug. 24. The German flyers are believed to have landed in Cartwright Bay, Labrador, from Greenland. The Hudson Bay steamer Bay-Nain received a radio message front the ’plane at 2.18 p.m., New York time, saying that it was almost at Cartwright-, and expected to land in 10 minutes. There is no radio at Cartwright-. ST. JOHN’S (Newfoundland), Aug. 24. Yon Gronau, the German airman, left Cartwright. Battle Harbour and Point Amour wireless stations report a ’plane passing nearby, apparently taking a course along the St. Lawrence River for a destination unknown. Later Yon -Gronau passed Cape Auguille (Newfoundland) at 10.30 a.m.. flving towards Halifax. HALIFAX, Aug. 24. Yon Gronau was forced down by heavy rains at Oueensport Harbour, Nova- Scotia, at 3.45 p.m.
POSSIBLE! EAST-WEST ROUTE. Received 11 a.m. to-day. OTTAWA, Aug. 25. Canadian aviation authorities think that van Gronau’;? flight seems to prove, conclusively the feasibility of a North Atlantic air route as one eventually to he adopted from Europe to America. A group of young English explorers now in the the Arctic are gathering data, with the intention of planning a route from Europe into central Canada. ARRIVAL AT HALIFAX. Received 11.15 a.m. to-dav. HALIFAX, Aug. 25. Yon Gronau and his companions arrived here at 3 p.m. local time and immediately started refuelling preparatory to resuming the flight to New York.
