COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL

SESSIONS AT HAWERA MUSIC AND ELOCUTION ATTRACTIVE ITEMS PRESENTED. A good house greeted the opening of the first evening session of the Hawera Competitions Festival last .evening, commencing at 7 p.m. at the Opera House, when recalls from the earlier numbers of the programme were included in the presentation. During the evening, Mr W. H. Dixon, who as musical director for the Y.M.C.A. in East Anglia during the Great War and acting in a similar capacity in France in 1918, had ample opportunity of assessing the beneficial effects of massed singing, conducted community singing. Later commenting on its effect he said the spirit counted for more than vocal technique, the quality of optimism and the lightening of care and worry were very real benefits to be derived from joint singing. To get the spirit of song into human beings was a factor in making life more pleasant and happier. As instances of its power of relief he quoted the singing of soldiers at the war and massed unemployed miners at Home. On conclusion of the afternoon, session Mr Dixon, as adjudicator in the- vocal and instrumental music section, expressed his satisfaction of the excellent array of talent. He had, he said, often heard of Hawera as being a musical centre and was now competent to verify the reputation.
