Mr If. G. Dickie, M.P., returned to Wellington this morning after spending the week-end at Hawexa. Messrs D. Dobson (of Weddels, Ltd.) and G. Davidson (Marketing Association) are staying at the: Egmout Hotel, .Hawera. Messrs F. W. Sutton and W. Harris, Inspectors of Stock at New' Plymouth and Stratford, were passengers for the south by train this morning. Mr G. JR. A. Whiting, who has been the district inspector of factories at New Plymouth for live years, will retire on superannuation on September 20. Mr Whiting joined the Public Service in July, 1914, and was subsequently stationed at Christchurch, Auckland and Gisborne. After his retirement Mr Whiting intends to take a holiday and on his return will .settle in Gisborne with his daughter, Mrs J. L. Brown. The death of the Duke of Northumberland is announced. The Duke, who had been ill for some time, was 50 years of age. He "was a man of marked abilitly in speech and public affairs, and led a controversy on the nationalisation of mines in 1919. He served in the South African War and in the Sudan. lu 1911 he married the younger daughter of the Duke of Bichmond. He is survived by his widow, four sons and two daughters.
