England non the eight-oared, rowing championship at the Empire Games at Hamilton. New Zealand was second, three-quarters of a length away, and Canada third, live lengths away. The Lachine Rowing Club (Montreal) defeated Hamilton Leander in the 1401 b eight-oared race by inches. Whelpton, of the Leander Club, won the international 1401 h single sculls. Bile and Richards (Canada) won the double'sculls. On Tuesday night Joyce Cooper (England) won the women’s 100 yards free-style swimming, creating a new Canadian record of 67 seconds. Ellen King (Scotland) was second and Valerie Davies (Wales) third. In the women’s springboard diving O. Wliitesett (South Africa) was first. Doris Ogilvie (Canada) second and Molly Bailey (Canada); third.’ Canada won the men’s 800 yards relay. England was second. Ryan ' (Australia) swam marvellously to win the 1500 yards free-style. Bridson (New Zealand) was second and Burleigh (Canada) third. In the rinks England defeated Scotland by 19 to 16, and Canada defeated South Africa by 29 to 14. Ethel Catherwood won the running high jump and also the javelin throw. The following are the winners of the Canadaian women’s running championships held in connection with the Empire Games: 60 metres.—Junior, Irene Storey, time Bsee; intermediate, Lilian Palmer, time 9 7-10 sec; senior. Myrtle Cook, 7 7-lOsec. The 100 metres for senior Avomen was won by Myrtle Cook in 12 7-lQsec. The 100. metres senior hurdles was won by Miss F. Bell in 16 l-10sec.
