OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT. “THE LAUGHING LADY.'’ The fame which Ruth Cbatterton established for herself in “Ohaiming Sinners” and “Madame X,” gains added! glamour in her newest. Paramount, picture, “The Laughing Lady,” now drawing large audiences to the Opera House." She is seen as the -stair of this powerful human drama, played against a baekgrornd of .smart sophistication, with Olive Brook, one of fandom’s great favourites, as her leading man. EMIL .TANNINGS IN “BETRAYAL.” Emil Jawnings, supported by two of Hollywood’s most popular featured players, Esther Ralston and Gary Cooper, has produced the sixth of his grippingly powerful human dramas for Paramaunt. The .picture is “Betrayal,” which will be the attraction at the Grand! Theatre for two nights, commencing to-night, to-night for the last time. tannings’ characters have always been taken directly from life, and, in this story of the Swiss A'ips, he has a role which does justice to his wonderful talent for interpretation. As the selfsatisfied. self-centred good-natured Swiss burgher, Jarmings gives- a performance unsurpassed on the screen, one worthy of comparison with his immortal pictuxisation of the mad Czar in “Tire Patriot.” The cast, headed by Miss Ralston and Cooper, was carefully selected from Hollywood’s- .best dramatic talent. 'With this background the story follows the vengeful career of the fanatical Hr. Manchu, his wily machinations which bring a beautiful girl into bis clutches, and his attempts to force her to work his will against his enemies, but it differs from many mystery stories in that there is no uncertainty about who commits ’the crimes.
