TOWN BOARD MEETING

The 0 pun alee Town Board's monthly meeting was held on Monday evening. The chairman (Mr A. .T. Brennan) presided and there were also present Messrs W. J. S. Dudley H. Mantey, W. Cun son. H. Booker, F. Hammond and A. Raynor. The ranger reported that 50 head of stock had been impounded and released during the month. The Railway Department notified that a commission would inquire in'xi lie walin sey.eln: desirability of continuing branch railway lines and that certain local bodies would be asked to prepare evidence in each district wheer such lines were operating. I As the Dammit County Council was not one of the local bodies mentioned m the circular the Town Board decided to forward a copy to that council, as farmers were more in to rested in the railway than the townspeople. _ The hoard will be represented _in giving evidence before the commission. The Pi.hama, Awatuna and Te Kiri districts of the Egmont county are very much interested in the matter, and it • was considered steps should l he taken immediatelv bv the branches of the Farmers’ Union to .see that their interests were not neglected at the inquiry.

PERSONAL

Mr A. O’Brien, who has been clerk of the Opunake Town Board for many years .intimated at the last, meeting of the board that, he would shortly be retiring. Many local bodies were assisted, in the early stages by Mr O’Brien. The power board andi harbour board had the town hoard clerk to do the secretarial duties for a number of years. Miss C. Auden, who is leaving Opunake. was entertained by the members of the Girls’ Hoe.kev Ohib at an evening party at Mrs S>. R,. Reaver's residence on Monday. Miss Arden was the recipient of a 'presentation from the members of an xylonite brush, ooinb and mirror as a. token of goodwill and the interest she had taken, in the club during her term as secretary of the club.
