MEMBER AND HIS “PRICE.” MR). SPEAKER INTERVENES. A statement by Mr H. M, .Rnshworth (Country, Bay of Islands) was resented hy Mr O. H. C'linkard (l Rotorua) in the House of Representatives last evening, and Mr Speaker had to, intervene to gain ail assurance that no reference to Air Clinkard’s private business was being made. Mr Rushworth had been referring to the criticism level led by Mr Cl in hard against Air J. S. Fletcher (Ind., Grey Lynn), in consequence of the latter voting against the Government on the recent no-confidence amendment. Air Rushworth said lie had come to the conclusion that Air Fletcher was somewhat of a political wasp. At the same time Air Rushworth referred to the issue of party loyalty raised by Mr Clinkard against Mr Fletcher. By inference Air Clinkard had held Juinsell up as a. model of loyalty. “What if I was to suggest that the member for Rotorua liacl his pricer asked Air Rushworth. Air Clinkard: It would be a most improper suggestion. Mr Rushworth: He is very interested in the timber industry, and it would not be unreasonable for me to suggest that ho had a. consideration for his loyalty. It was at this stage that Air Clinkard rose in protest. “Is this allowed?”, ho asked Air Speaker.

Mr Rusliworth : I was suggesting that tho member for Rotorua might be able, to persuade the Government to put an additional duty on timber. Mr Speaker asked" Mr Rmshwortli whether lie had been referring to All' Clinkard’s private business. Mr Itusliworth : Oh, no. Ido not know his private business. 1 was suggesting that if the member for Grey Lynn had been able to persuade the Government to deal with his pet hobby in the same way as it lias dealt with tho pet hobby of tho member for Rotorua, the member for Grey Lynn might be loyal to iiis r«rty. ‘ . .. In order to clear up any doubts, Mr Speaker a sked: All- Rush worth whether lie had] intended to suggest that Mr Clinknrcl had followed’ a certain course for private gain. Air Rlushwortli replied that the suggestion had not been in his mind. Ho did not suggest that Air Clinkardi had private interests in timber, or find made any private deals in timber. He was referring only to his political position. Air Glinknrd had made a. plea for prohibitive duties—almost an embargo —on food staid’s, and, by reference, Air Rush worth assumed Air Clinkard also to bo an ardent advocate for the retention of tlie present very high duties on wheat. The member for Rotorua was silent on the question, sf> evidently that was so. Mr Rush worth then said he would turn to a. subject more interesting than the member for Rotorua, and the incident closed.—“ The Dominion.’’
