COAL SCOW SINKS
LEAK SPRUNG AT WHARF. RIGHTED BY CRANE. AUCKLAND, Aug. 5. While alongside the Union Company’s collier Kaponga at the King’s wharf this morning, a .small seowi named the Mocha ii, sprung a leak and capsized. No one was on board at the time, but a coal cargo valued at .Cloo was. tipped into the harbour. The mishap occurred shortly before mid-day, when the scow, which is owned by the. Northeote and Birkenhead Gas Company, was ready to bo towed across the harbour to Northeote. The vessel sprang a leak and filled rapidly. The weight of the water caused her to heel sharply over. The harbour board was rung up for assistance, but the tug To Awahina, which is fitted with powerful pumps, was not handy, and in little more than ten minutes, the siow turned turtle. At the time of the accident the Moehau was loaded with between 50 and GO tons of coal. During the afternoon the capsized scow was towed round to the floating crane, which made, light work of the job of righting her.
