ANTARCTIC LAND
BRITAIN’S CLAIMS i SAID TO BE CHALLENGEABLE AMERICAN WOMAN’S DECLARATION. Preea Association— By Eleotru- Ivi-jimjn • xipyrig/iL.» Received 11.15 a.m. to-day. NEW YORK, Aug. 5. Many of Britain’s claims in the Antarctic, particularly in the Falkland dependencies and the Ros:s Sea tiependencies, are challengeable on the basis of right of discovery, Mrs. Laura Martin, geologist and geographer, of Washington, told members of the Institute of Politics, which is now meeting at Williamstown (Mass.). Site said that Britain asserted dominion over several jHilar areas extending beyond the parts discovered by Englishmen, and she cited Wilkes Land, part fo the segment discovered by Lieutenant Wilkes, of the United States Navy, in 1840, although explored more fully by the Australian expedition of 1911-12. If Britain should project these claims to the Pole, at she had done in the Falkland Island and Ross Sea dependencies, it could be seen that altogether she claimed nearly three-fifths of a continent of 5,000,000 square miles.
