CEMETERIES TO BE ABOLISHED

LINKS WITH THE PAST. The last vestiges of cemeteries in Stambonl are to disappear. In the eighteenth century, when only Turks resided in Peril, Lady Mary "Wortley Montague was struck .by its resemblance to an immense cemetery. With the expansion of the European population. the Moslem burying-grounds began to give way. But everywhere, even in the busiest quarters, there can still be found remnants of cemeteries, where for centuries venerable tombs have under, the shadow of cypresses, stood as relics of the past. According to a recent decision, the dead will no longer be allowed to rest in the neighbourhood of men. Their bones will be transferred to cemeteries situated outside the town and the cypresses will be felled. In their place large buildings are to be erected by the Administration of Sacred Foundations.
