TELEPHONES AND “BOOKIES”

CUTTING-OFF OF SERVICES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) W'JiLUNGTOX. Aug. 5. The statement that the oiitti.ng-off of fiome telephones in. Wellington was done by the P. and T. Department as a result of a. statement made in Parliament is taken exception to by the Secretary of the General Post Office. He • pointed out to-day that such action is being constantly taken all over New Zealand when the department is stapplied with the facts. The .secrecy of subscribers’ conversations is observed l ai» strictly as possible. and, therefore, this department must rely on outside information. The action taken here was not unusual, nor did! it follow any statement madei in Parliament. The customary action was to ask the police to report on any suspicious cases and to submit a report to the Minister, who alone; had the power to order the removal of any telephone used for illegal purposes. _ The tapping of subscribers’ conversations was not permitted on anv account.
