CANBERRA, July 30
Unexjiectedly the Prime Minister introduced the Sales Tax Bill in the House of Representatives to-day. The tax, which will conic into operation on August 1, will be paid on the sale value'of goods. Important exemptions are cigarettes, newspapers, petrol, household water, gas, meat, bread, beer, fertilisers, electricity, flour, dairy produce, primary products and boxes and crates.
The general scheme, Mr Scullin explained, is that this tax shall be paid by the last vendor of goods to retailer or direct to the consumer. Coupled with the necessity to levy the tax in respect to all imported goods, the Bill also requires that the retailer who imports the goods shall pay the tax at the time of entry.
