< FULL OF SURPRISES CONSERVATIVES’ VICTORY DOMINION TREATIES TN JEOPARDY. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright). Received 12.30 p.m. to-day. OTTAWA, July 29. The election is full of surprises and in many ways it recalled that of 191 i, when the Liberals were defeated on the Fielding Budget of reciprocity with the United States by the defection cf the Quebec Liberal block. The Government went to the country on Monday largely on the Dunning Budget of increased British preference, and Quebec returned 24 Conservatives. Mr. Bennett will have a following of 136 and has a clear working majority without the help of the depleted Independent groups. It is the first time since the war that the Government has been in this position. Mr. Bennett, has pledged himself to

call a special session of Parliament to ideal with unemployment, but the ques--Atisn of Canadian representation at the Imperial and Economic Conferences must be speedily decided. ' The task of Cabinet-making has been simplified by the election of a dozen Conservatives who are ex-Cabinet Ministers. Conservative gains are notable all over the country, perhaps especially in Manitoba. where they won 12 -seats, against none last election. Miss Agnes Maephail, United Farmer, Grey South West, is the only woman elected.

The defeat of the Government leaves

the Australian Treaty and the renewal of the New Zealand Treaty in jeopardy. Mr. Bennett, in his campaign, declared that he would, if elected, abrogate all treaties “working to the disadvantage of Canada.” Later he specifically mentioned the Australian and New Zealand Treaties. Fie opposes particularly the- importation of New Zealand butter, and his opposition undoubtedly won him many seats on the Canadian agricultural prairies. The new Premier is pledged to adopt a policy of protective tariffs.
