YOUNG PEOPLE’S INSTITUTE

LECTURE AND DEBATE

Aj record! gathering of 70 members and friends was attracted by this week’s fortnightly meeting of the St. ■John’s Young People’s Institute, held last night in the Sunday School Hall. 'The recently-debated question of the future of the Pacific was again raised by a geographical lectuxette delivered by Mr J. C. Fincnater. Members obtained a much clearer idea of the matter as a result of the lecturer’s judicious- reference to maps. In his address Mr Fiudlater also mentioned • the commercial side of the question, the changing froim.au Atlantic to a Pacific world of commerce, the raw materials going to waste in adjoining countries, besides the political menace of Japanese jurisdiction in the Marshall Islands, The visiting Anglican Bible classes, which were strongly .represented, then brought forward their team to contest with St. John's representatives the subject “That patriotism is the most fruitful source of war.” Mr O. V. Church presided, whilst Mr Findlatar, assisted by Mr A. Tullock judged the speaking. The visitors, represented by Messrs Ekdahl (leader), Horner and Hancock, took the negative side and succeeded in defeating their opponents —Messrs Sage (leader), Clement- and Bourke—by 173 points to 150. Messrs Ekdahl and Bourke. with 8Q and 77 points respectively, were adjudged the best speakers of the evening. Rev. Dobbs, in moving a vote of thanks to the judges and chairman for their assistance during the evening, and: for the invitation extended bo his class, expressed a, hope that many more of such combined gatherings might take place. A most enjoyable and profitable evening concluded with supper.
