FIRE AT OPUNAKE
BEACH PAVILION DESTROYED. BLAZE LAST EVENING. (From Our Own Correspondent). At about 9.3 U last evening fire complete y gutted the well-known pavilion ;in the Gpunake beach. The building, which was owned by :hia o‘punake Seaside Improvement Society, and leased to Mrs E. J enkins, V vais a largo structure containing a lance floor, with living rooms and a kitchen at the sides. The origin of the fire is a mystery. Mrs Jenkins, who was the only one at acme, received a telephone call from New Plymouth at about 9.15 o’clock, and was delivering the message -rereived. On returning the wlioie place .ras found to be wrapped in flames. An alarm was raised, but in the absence >f a suitable water supply nothing aoailcl be done. Very little was saved, from the building, but a Frigidaire on the front verandah was removed!.
The insurances on the building, stock iind furniture are nqt yet available, but both the owners and the lessor will be leavy losers, as at the. beginning of last season, the building was repaired arret several improvements effected, while mew furniture a.nd fittings were also mrelra.sed.
