MUSICAL EVENING
AT WOMEN’S CLUB,
INTERESTING PROGRAMME
In connection with the music circle of the Women’s Club in Hawera, a most interesting evening was held on Monday at the club rooms, when Mr L. O. Hooker took round his gramophone with a specially selected list of records and provided 'the programme. There was a good attendance of members, and all thoroughly enjoyed the performance. The list of compositions, chosen with a view to suit all tastes, included the overture from “Russian Festival of High Easter” (Rimsky Korsakoff), vocal selections from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance”; piano solo, “Hungarian Rhapsody” (Liszt), played by Lavitski; violin solos by Kreisler; arias, “Comfort Ye” and “Every Valley,” from “The Messiah”; Beethoven trio, “The Archduke.” by Cortot (piano), Thibaud (violin) and Casals (’cello); piano solos, Chopin “Etudes,” by Backhaus; quartette, “Bella Eizha Dell Amore,” from “Rigoletto” (Verdi); sextet, “Chi mi frena,” from “Lucia di Lammermuir” (Donnizctti) ; and vocal solo, “Shadow Song” (Dinorah), sung by Galli Curei.
In the great instrumental trio, Miss C. Reilly read a series of explanatory notes, giving the outstanding features of the work and its significance. The evening was most instructive and will help to popularise the worn of the music circle among members of the club.
