Sisarich’s restaurant, we,re inundated with water. The stock of neighbouring business premises, particularly that of Mr. AY. G. Liddell’s bookshop, also, suffered considerable damage from smoke. Mr. Clark’s stock, little of which was saved, was insured. The outbreak was first noticed at about 11.45. The fire originated in the back of the wooden building and had made rapid progress by the time, the brigade arrived. Flames were leaping to a great height and attracted a, large crowd! to the scene. Very little was .saved, but the cash register was removed to_ safety. The prompt action of the brigade prevented a serious fire in the wooden buildings in the vicinity, although Turnbull and Jones’ premises were protected by a fire-proof brick wall.
