GOODS AGENT RETIRES
forty years with, railway. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 16. Mi. E. J. Lezard, goods agent at 'Wellington for the Railways Department, will retire on May 24 after over 40 years’ service in the department, Mr. Lezard commenced as a cadet at Christchurch and five years latei was appointed transport officer, vvhicli position he held for nine years. At that period grain was the main item of transport, and the troubles of the transport officer were many and the duties arduous. He then served 12 years in Canterbury as stationmaster, and was assistant istationinaster at Bluff for 18 months. From there lie was transferred to Dannevirke, and immediately afterwards was appointed relieving officer for the Wellington district. After 18 months in that position he was made traffic inspector of the Wellington district, holding this position for three and a-half years. Ho then served three years as audit inspector, and seven years ago took up the position of goods agent, which he will hold up to his retirement. Mr Lezard was responsible for many radical changes which facilitated the handling and dispatch of goods traffic from Wellington.
