UNKNOWN WARRIOR
HOW BODY WAS CHOSEN CHAPLAIN’S DISCLOSURE. IDENTITY ABSOLUTELY UNKNOWN. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) Received 2.15 p.m.. to-day. LONDON, May 17. After 11 years the secret of how the Unknown Warrior was chosen from the thousands lying in France has been revealed bv Rev. George Kendall, then senior chaplain to the 63rd/ Naval 1 Division. He was responsible with others for the body’s transport to England. Rev. Kendall discloses that the body was chosen from five others, all robed. “We took one from unknown graves at tlie Yores salient and five of the others from the Marne areas and the Cambria fronts. The sixth: came from a grave much flirt her south. All six were identical in appearance and were placed in a Unit, tlie door of which was looked. The. next morning an officer entered the hut alone and. chose one coffin. The other five, were reverently reburied. “People have asked me: To we know where the soldier who lies in Westminster Abbev comes from? Is he absoIntelv unknown?’ My answer is this: ‘Yes! lie is abohitely unknown.’ ”
