RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT

GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSALS

% Jly Telegraph—Pres.? Association.) ROTORUA, May 14. The following official statement was released alter a meeting of Cabinet this afternoon : The question of unemployment received further consideration by Cabinet r‘ at its meeting to-day. Following a 'discussion the Prime Minister stated that the total number of men registered at the bureau as fit for heavy work was, according to latest returns, 3502, less men who had either refused of left Government works of their _ own accord since January 1, 548, leaving a net total of 2954. Tiie .Public W orks Department had already arranged for employment for 606 men, and with a view to affording further measures of relief the Government has decided _to make provision f-or an additional 1500 men in various districts of the Dominion to be employed on public works and afforestation. There were also several other schemes- under consideration. It would be seen, therefore, that the total of those who were at present unfortunately out of work would be materially reduced at an early date. “The matter of dealing with the difficult question of unemployment,”, concluded Sir Joseph Ward, “will continue to receive- the closest attention of the Government with the object of providing as much work ns possible before the winter comes on. I might also say that one of the private afforestation companies in the Dominion lias recently aquired a substantial area of land in Rotorua. It is their intention to employ a -large number of men in plant, ino" operations as soon as possible.” J Cabinet will continue its delibera"‘>4ions to-night and to-morrow. The length of the period depends upon circumstances.
