Ivess tried to induce me to leave the Hawera field clear, and asked me to name my price, declaring that lie did not want to fight an old friend like me (we had known each other in “dear old Bendigo,” Victoria,, for a. short time). As I did not respond, he asked me how much 1 would give him to retire. 1 replied that L had received such promises of support all round from business people as well as residents
