A FORMER TOWN CLERK
LATE MR. W. 11. E. WANKLYN The late Mr. AY. 11. E. AA T anklvn (the first Town Clerk of Hawera) was born in Monmouthshire in 1807, and was educated as an accountant. He arrived in Wellington by the ship Rakaia in 1577, and was for two years in the employ of a bank at Hawera. He entered into business as an accountant and commission agent, and for 11 years was clerk for the Haw ora Town Board, and later Town Clerk of the Borough. In 1889 lie was married to a daughter of the late Canon Gould, of Otaliuhu, Auckland, and liad two sons, one of whom was killed in the war. The other, Mr. D. End'ell Wanklyn, is in practice in Christchurch as a barrister and solicitor. The late Mr. AVanklyn was until a few years ago one of the most prominent racing officials in New Zealand. AA r hile residing in Taranaki he was for a time secretary of the Egmont Racing Club. In 1890, ’ was appointed secretary of the Cantepoffry Jockey Club, and held that position for nearly thirty years, resigning in September, 1919, T>e>* causc of ill-health. He was also for a number of years secretary of the New Zealand Racing Conference, and during his tenure of that office was largely instrumental in. the establishment of the Accident Fund, which has proved so beneficial to all connected with racing. He edited the “New Zealand Stud Book” since the publication of that work was taken over by the Racing Conference in 1900, and also contributed other notable volumes to Turf literature, “The Australasian. Racehorse, ’ ’ and ‘ ‘ The Great Sires ’, Lines. ’ *
For nine years prior to his death, Mr AVanklyn Was a member of the. Boatv.t of Directors of the Christchurch Press Co., Ltd; Ilis death: occurred at Montreal on November 20th, 1920, while he was abroad on a holiday trip.
