“We hear that a white marble monument, which is to be erected to the memory of the late Miss Bobie, on the site of the murder, has arrived at Opunake. The pedestal is square and is surmounted by a cross bearing a crown of thorns. On the front of the pedestal the following inscription has been engraved: ‘ln memory of Mary Beatrix, daughter of Major H. M. Bobie, late of the Madras Army. Born December 22, 1850; died .November 20, 1880. This memorial is erected by the noncommissioned officers and men of the Armed Constabulary stationed at Opunake and Cape Egmont, December, 1880.’”—“Hawera and Normanby Star,” January 12, 1881.
