1853 Title of province altered from “ New Plymouth to “Taranaki.” :1 863Confiscation of native lands north of Waingongoro. 1865 January 30— Confiscation of native lands south of Waingongoro. March —• General Cameron lands at Patea. Cameron builds blockhouses at Manutahi, Manawapou, Hawera (old site), and Waihi. Canadian Redoubt built by local settlers. December 31 Chute’s march up Coast begins, 1866 January 31— Otapawa captured. February 5 Chute passes through Hawera after subjugating Plains.
1867 July— Imperial forces depart. 3.803 Armed Constabulary raised and Waihi (new fort) gairisoned. June 10— _ ‘ Murder of Cahill, Squires and Clerk. July 7 Hauhaus’ attack on Turuturu-Mokai Redoubt, August 21— Capture of Te Ruaruru by McDonnell. September 7 Defeat of McDonnell at Te Ngutu-o-te-Manu. 1869 Hauhaus finally dispersed at Ngaere. 1870— Hawera Blockhouse erected. 1871— January 11 — Fii’st coach through Wanganui to Hawera, 1874Surveyors ejected from Plains. 1875Captain Blake ents np Normanby lands. 1876Telegraph line opened to New Plymouth. 1876Local Road Board established. 1878March 20— Hawera Public Library incorporated. 18^9 — January— _ First coach passes via Mountain Road to New Plymouth.. Royal Commission appointed to decide ownership of Waimatc Plains. Formation “Hawera Republic.” Native ploughing raids at Livingston’s, Lysaght’s and Finlavson’s. 1880— April 10 — “Hawera Star’s” first issue.
