A cable from Paris, dated 'March 16, announces the death of General Primo de Rivera, former Spanish Dictator. A Rugby wireless message says that the Home' Secretary has appointed Mr Edward Hale Tindal Atkinson Director of Public Prosecutions in place of Sir Archibald Bodkin, who retires on pension.

Mr R. W. D. Robertson, the wellknown importer, of New Plymouth, accompanied! by Mrs and Miss Robertson, were on thus morning’s south express to take passage on the Port Brisbane for England, leaving Lyttelton on Saturday next. Mr Robertson and party expert to be away tor nine months.

Mr W. L. Kennedy, district coroner, of Stratford, was a passenger by the south, express this morning! in route to Tirnaru to attend' a three-day conference of the Dominion Federation ,of Justices’ Association, on which body he ns a vice-president (Taranaki branch). The president of the Dominion I ©deration (Mr H. Trimble. Inglewood) was also on tile train to attend the conference which commences on Wednesday. At its conclusion delegates will participate in a visit to Mjt. Cook.

Many friends in Hawera and district of Mrs Weston-Arnold, of Whangarei, will deeply regret to hear of her death at the early age of years after an illness of about a month. She was the second -daughter of Mr and the late •Mrs L. 'Carroll, of Hawera, and before marriage was on the staff of the Whangarei High School. Her husband, wUn an infant child, is left to mourn her passing, and much sympathy will be felt by friends in the very sad event. The funeral will take place at Hawera on Wednesday.

The good work done for the Auroa Sports Club by Mr. F. Aroa. was recognised on Saturday at the annual meeting, when a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to him by acclamation, and lie was made a life member of the club. In moving the resolution, Mr. Bradford, president, said that during the last two years Mr. Aroa had been secretary and had been responsible largely for the club’s success, specially in collecting trophies and in securing competitors. In acknowledging the vote. Mr. Aroa- said he regretted very much his inability to continue owing to being unable to give the time necessary for the work.

The death at New Plymouth on Thursday of Mr John Heron, at the age of 78, removed a highly esteemed settler of the Ell ha m -Ra\vhitiroa district, in (which he had resided for 36 years. At the time of his death he was spending a holiday in New Plymouth. The late Mr Heron was born at 'Waterford, Ireland, and came to New Zealand in 1'875. After living at Auckland and Christchurch, he took up a section at Rawhitiroa when the settlement was opened up. Ho conducted a blacksmith shop in Eltham for many years and was very popular. ■He was known as a most obliging tradesman, one who felt it iwas no trouble to shoe horses for the settlers at. any hour of the day or night, and he had been known to leave his home in Rawhitiroa at all hours and go to the shop to- give service. Ho is survived by one daughter (Miss A. Heron, of Rawhitiroa), who kept house for her father and nursed him since lie became an invalid during the past few years. Mrs Heron died eight years ago.
