NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Maecenas.”) Under his load of nine stone Tenner© ran a good, race last Thursday. His next appearance may be at the Rangitikei meeting. ***** Silvermine never appeared to be galloping right in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui last Thursday. He certainly did not repeat liis form of the Taranaki meeting. ***** Ridgemount always does liis best when allowed to go to the lead in races. At Wanganui last Thursday Ridgemount was restrained over the first half-mile and his showing was disappointing. ***** Leisure was backed down to an absurdly short price for the Maiden Race at Wanganui. After having every chance she filled second place, and on the showing is only a moderate. * * * * * Considering his good performances and his consistency, added to which was the advantage of H. Gray’s services as rider, Otairi paid a great dividend to win last Thursday. ***** Paitonu went really well at Wanganui last Thursday, and on the performance should soon get oil the winning l list. ***** When, the tapes rose for the Juvenile Handicap last Thursday, Isa was badly left, being last of the eleven runners. She showed such speed over the first four furlongs that she was actually alongside of Autopav racing to the straight.

***** In liack races Equitant, Treasury and Belle Star usually show out prominently in the early stages, but at the Wanganui meeting last Thursday the two-year-olds began too brilliantly for those named. * * * * * Yoma covered much extra ground in ‘ the recently run AVanganui Cup through his rider having him placed on the outside of three other runners. Alore judiciously handled, Yoma must have earned some “place” money. ***** Corinax does not usually run well under a substantial weight, but on the first day at AVanganui he put up a good fight, after having anything but a good run in the middle stages of the race. * * * * * l Dolomite earned the name of being unreliable in races when tried in Australia, and some of his efforts since coming to this Dominion have strengthened such opinions. Suspecting a physical disability special gear was tried on Dolomite, and lie Inis won each race .under the licip of the straps. »«*•** The stewards of the AVanganui Jockey Club anticipated a substantial decrease in the totalisator returns ol last Thursday, so the small increase recorded came a.s a- pleasant surprise, i * * * * * 1 Potoaform has made many attempts to win in maiden company, but it was not till Thursday last that he succeeded, and then much of the honours of the victory was due to judicious riding on the part of H. Gray. ***** Ruanui looked well on Thursday last and ran quite up to his best form. But for being) carried out by his stablemate. Consent, Ruanui must have finished second and returned to his large army of backers most of their investment. * * * * * Count- Palatine ran a fine race in the Stewards’ Handicap at \\ anganui last Thursday, and after the bad passage he received his second placing was a good performance. With a good run he must have extended Otairi. ***** Outside of In the Shade, The Hawk finished better in last Thursday’s A\ anganui Cup than any other runner, and the performance confirms his good form in the recently run Taranaki Cup. Unfortunately, The Hawk broke down in Thursday’s race, and at his age the chance of his “coming back” appears remote. * * * * * The connections of In the Shade were very confident this Australian- | bred gelding would prove hard to heal l in the AVanganui Cup of Thursday last. Over the first six furlongs, run in the I slow time of 1.20)-, In the Shade was last, and at the mile post, passed in the better time of 1.42), lie bad moved onlv a little nearer the leaders, but over the last six furlongs In the Shade outclassed his opponents, to win * with ridiculous ease. * * * * * In long-distance handicaps contested by good-sized fields there is invariably much “cutting in” and bumping, if a fast pace is not set over the first ball of the journey. In the recently run Taranaki and AVanganui Cups the lightly-weighted division were not disposed to make the pace as fast as desirable, lienee some of the more heavily weighted division received bad passages. Such happenings are unavoid- ! able.
