AMATEUR SPORTS

INITIAL MEETING AT ELTHAM. [ SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The .Eltham Amateur Athletic Club was favoured, witn line weatner and a large attendance, of spectators for its first annual sports gatneu-ing, held yesterday on Taumata Park, Eltham. Splendid ■support was accorded by competitors from Haw-era, New Plymouth rind Stratford, and a comprehensive ■programme of nine pedestrian, five field, six cycle and six piping and dancing events provided keen competition throughout the after-noon. Large fields and close finishes were tile order of the day.

Much appreciated programmes of a wide range of selections were submitted by the Hit-ham Pipe and Brass Bands and the able control of proceedings by the club officials left little to be desired. The various events- were expeditiously handled by Messrs R. E. Thomas (referee), W. Ricketts, W. Rigg, J. C. Walsh, T. Bennett (judges), F. Vincent, H. L. Kasper, J. Keelar (timekeepers), At ■ Ware (announcer), A.. Whiting (starter), H. N. Murray (result steward), R. McWilliam (secretary), and Miss Dorothy Gower, who judged the dancing events.
