ATHLETIC CONTESTS

CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIPS. ATTRACTION AT HAWERA. Preparatory details in connection with the organisation of the WanganuiTaranaki Centre athletic championships, to be held at Hawera on Saturday, March I, occupied the attention of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club committee, which met at the offices of Air T. A. Kinmont last evening. There were present: Messrs L. H. Clapliam (chairman), R. Lendrum (secretary), L. Hunt, J. Dredge, S. A. Lay, H. S. Maslin, L. I. Marter and T. A. Kinmont. In accordance with a previous discussion approval was given to the action of the president in forwarding a letter to the Hawera Retailers’ Association requesting that shops be closed at- eight clock on the Saturday evening of the championship gathering in order to give the greatest measure of opportunity to the public to witness the evening sports. The letter explained that the club was compelled to arrange the championships on a Saturday on account of outside competitors, who would be unable to make the visit on the town’s weekly half-holiday. A reminder that only financial members would be eligible to compete at the championships was conveyed in a letter received from the centre requesting that a list of all registered members of the club be forwarded in order that arrangements could be made for the checking of nominations. The offer of Wills’ Melody Orchestra to provide a programme of music during the evening session of the championships was accepted with thanks. Advice of the intention of the Egmont A. and P. Association to hold a gymkhana at Hawera on March 26 was received from the association, and in compliance with the association’s suggestion it was decided to arrange for a programme of athletic and cycling events.

Following further discussion concerning the proposed Taranaki club championships at Stratford, as.distinct from the centre championships, it was decided to request clubs >to appoint delegates to meet at Stratford on February 24 to consider the suggestion.

For the continuance of the club evening meetings the following programme for Wednesday next was approved:— 120 yards hurdles, 75 yards, 100 yards, 220 yards, SBO yards, ladies’ 100 yards (scratch race), 100 yards primary schools, 100 yards secondary schools, discus throw, polo vault, primary schools relay, half-mile cycle, three mile cycle, one mile cycle scratch race (championship selection).
