THE STOCK MARKET

SOUTH TARANAKI PRICKS.

NEWTON KING’S REPORT.

Messrs Newton King, Ltd., report on the stock market as follows for the week ending January 18: Beef.—ln reviewing the stock market and drawing a comparison with the prices .that were ruling at this period last year, the figures show that tlx© prices at present ruling in this section are almost on a par with those that were being obtained for the corresponding period, except that the demand for good quality cow and heifer beef may be >a 'little firmer than perperhaps it was last January, this being undoubtedly due to* the fact that supplies of , beef are of a more limited nature. Our- open markets aie practically devoid of any beef of any consequence, resulting in butchers’ requirements being fulfilled through the medium of private treaty. The following is a range of the prices at which requirements are being fulfilled: Heavy prime fat cows £l2 to £l3, lighter prime, sorts £lO 10s to £ll. The prices ruling for the small numbers, of mixed quality cattle that are coming forward to our various yards range between £8 10s and £lO 10s.

Pat Sheep.—A comparison in tins section reveals that the prices at present ruling for wether mutton show a decline of between 4s and 5s per need, while' ewe mutton has been reduced at from 5s to 7s per head. Supplies .n this section are much more plentiful than those offering for beet, and' no difficulty is being experienced in fulfilling requirements for local eons''mption, butchers’ requirements being fulfilled .at the following prices: Prime fat wethers 26s 6d to 28s, lighter scats 18s. Works buyers are still operating freely on fat lambs, but at about Id per lb less than the figure at which they were offering last season. The majority of the first drafts having been absorbed at prices at anything between 22s and 245,

Store Sheep. —The market throughout this section is much quieter than it was for this period last year; however, with our series? of fairs approaching, and with the good yardings that are anticipated a greater number of requirements have yet to be fulfilled, it is only natural to conclude that greater numbers will be on the move from now on. Of course, there are. fair number® coming forward to our fortnightly sales, and although these are not altogether keenly competed for, generally speaking, full clearances are being effected.

Store Oattle. —The numbers offering in this section are insufficient to meet the demand, resulting in prices remaining firm, this applying more especially to good framed! young store cows, and where any of this class come under the hammer spirited competition is in evidence. Store bullocks are also fairly keenly sought after, but few of this class are being quoted, and in a number of cases requirements are by no means easy to fulfill. The prices ruling in the open markets for the first mentioned class range from £5 10s to £6 10s for good coloured and good framed' cattle, while others are making from £4 to £5. Few, if any, grown bullocks are being yarded, and of the sales of this class that have been effected through the medium of private treaty, prices have ranged from £9 to £1 010 s, according to the condition of the cattle.

Jersey Weaners. —A good enquiry lias ret in for this class, andl quite a number of safes have been effectedFor the most part the enquiry is for good quality cattle and ol th? lines that have been put together the prices have ranged at anything between £3 10s and £5. Fair numbers of this class are also being submitted art our fortnightly fixtures, and where anything. of quality is submitted, keen competition is in evidence, as was exemplified by the prices obtained at our Inglewood .sale on Wednesday last, when good quality all fawn oattle made up to £5. while others realised from £3 to £3 14 s. Dairy Cattle. —Heifers or.w.b. are now being quoted in good numbers for safe on a forward delivery basis. Generally speaking, the prices for the best quality cattle range between £lO 10s and £l2 10s, while others are being quoted :at from £8 JOs to £9 10s. Sales of a number of lines for delivery at the end of March have been effected! at from £lO to £lO 10s, but as yet the safes on this basis have been few. Pigs are being yarded in only fair numbers, and, with the competition that is in evidence, it would seem that there are insufficient to meet requirements and they are. therefore, selling at advanced prices to what they were at this period last year. The prices at present ruling range as follow. I/arge stores 33s to 355, smaller sorts 28s to 30l=» slips 24s to 265. best weaners 20s. others 16s to 18s.
