Tiie Szechwan province, with a population cjt approximately 70,000,000, is virtually isolated in regard to river communication in consequence of a terrific ice jamb reported in the Yangtsze gorges beyond Ichang. All the river shipping customarily travelling through the gorges is at a standstill. The ice packs are the result of weeks of intense wintry conditions. The ice rorms a solid wall and is holding uip many vessels with thousands of tons of cargo and causing concern to shipping firms and merchants. Dynamite is believed to be necessary to re-open the gorges. Severaii British gunboats are temporarily held prisoner behind the ioe packs. Thousands of inland junks and ferries _ throughout North China are similarly idle. Half the country’s canals are frozen. It is the severest winter for many years.
