CYCLONE DECLINING

The weather bureau reports that the cyclone is declining in intensity, but serious flooding is threatened in the Herbert Valley and other rivers following the torrential rain. Many places recorded over ten inches of rain in 48 hours, the Mossinah registering 12} iches. Buffetted for 24 hours by the cyclone, the steamer Morinda reached Cairns nine hours late. The wind reached a velocity of 85 miles hourly. Cabins and saloons were flooded. Fears are entertained for the safety of a fishing party aboard a launch which left Cairns on Friday for Noore Reef, where a lugger was wrecked on Saturday morning.
AH low-lying places north of Cairns are flooded. The mail train reached Townsville through water which rose a foot over the rails in many places.
