VICTORY BY AN INNINGS. DEFEAT OF SOUTHLAND.

INVERCARGILL, Jan. 6.

The match between M.C.C. and Southland was resumed this morning in brilliant sunshine, which prevailed throughout the day, making it ideal for the spectators and players olikei. The visitors had made 284 runs for nine wickets on Saturday and, contrary to expectations, did not declare their innings closed. The not out men, Allom and Gornford, carried 'the score to 309 before the former was clean bowled by Couplamd. The partnership had been an invaluable one and had added 106 runs at a time when runs were most needed.

The Southland batsmen made a poor showing and were dismissed for 105 runs in the first innings and 100 in the second, M.C.C. winning by an innings and 14 runs.

The Southland batsmen seemed incapable of dealing with tho slow bowling of Woolley, Duleepsinhji and Legge, and the majority of them were continually feeling for the ball in a most uncertain manner. It was bowling that called for good footwork, which seems from the display given to have been a phase of batting entirely neglected by the Southlanders.

In the first innings Southern was the most impressive and compiled 31 by steady cricket before being caught behind the wickets. Woolley secured the best 'bowling average in this innings, his slow breaks completely baffling some of the batsmen. Southern again top-scored in the second innings, but took a long time to get his 26. McGowan, who made 19, batted more attractively and with greater confidence. Tapiey was inclined to be aggressive, but did not last long. Legge was given a turn with the ball in this innings and had the batsmen guessing with his slow log breaks. He finished up with the fine average of six for 24. Shortly before the close of Southland’s first innings the wicket-keeper (Oornford) was struck above the eye by a ball and had to leave the field, •his place behind the 1 stumps being taken by Earle. Cornford received medical attention and had to have several stitches in the wound. The detailed scores are:— -
