NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
1 v ßy Telegraph —Press Association.) WANGANUI, Dec. 5. Heavy rainstorms and driving wind caused a postponement of the play in the iinai stages of the North Island lawn tennis championships at the Wanganui Club’s courts. A few matches were played oil Saturday morning, but the courts were not busy again until late in the week-end, when a start was made with the finals of the men’s and women’s doubles. The semi-finals of the ladies’ championship singles, played on Saturday morning, provided two surprises, Mrs. Adams defeating Mists Myers and Miss NicliolKs defeating Airs. Alelody, both winning in two set matches. All's. Adams commenced poorly and was down 3—l, but she soon got on to her gameMiss Myers was not at home on the heavy courts and was also troubled with perfect length shots to her back hand. In the second set Aliss Alveus was off her drive and Airs. Adams liadj no difficulty in finishing at 6 —2.
Aliss Nicholls won easily from Aim. Alelody, the latter not producing the form she had shown earlier in the tournament. Aliss Nicholls’ driving was perfect and Airs. Alelody was frequently out of position. Augas and Lampe were superior to Stedman and Charters, whom they met in the semi-finals of the* men’s championship doubles. The former pair combined better than on the previous day and played aggressively from the net, smashing and volleying with accuracy. Results :
Ladies’ Singles.—Semi-finals: All's. Adams beat Aliss Alveus 7—5, 6—2; M iss Nicholls beat Airs. Alelody 6 —4, 6—o.
Aden's Doubles.—Angus and Lampe beat Stedman and Charters 6—3, 6 —3.
